Biofuel and hybrid vehicles are taking over the world, and there’s an ever increasing variety of fuel-efficient cars to choose from.

Perhaps there’s a link with the party spirit of Rio that explains why Brazil has been one of the world leaders in in ethanol production for the last thirty years and today produces 30.1% of the world’s market share. In truth, the secret behind Brazil’s ethanol production success is the world’s most modern and efficient agricultural production of sugarcane, from which its ethanol is produced.

In 1976, the Brazilian government made it a legal requirement that all light vehicles should be converted to flexible fuel – a mixture of ethanol and gasoline. Only a minor adjustment needed to be made to gasoline engines, so the switchover was relatively straightforward. Since 2007, the mandatory blend has been set at 25% anhydrous ethanol to 75% gasoline.

The Brazilian car industry has followed suit by producing flexible fuel vehicles that can run on any combination of hydrous ethanol and gasoline. First launched in 2003, these flex vehicles have been a runaway success. In fact, in 2009 flex vehicles made up 92.3% of the market share of all new light vehicles and cars. Today, there are over 70 flex models available in Brazil, and ethanol fuel is available all over the country.

So, what about the rest of us – can we be like Brazil? Unfortunately, in Britain it can sometimes difficult to find a biofuel station. Perhaps this explains why hybrid cars are currently topping the eco-friendly driving charts in this country. A hybrid runs on a combination of a combustion engine (petrol or diesel) and an electric motor that assists with acceleration. There’s no secret to refueling – you just go to any fuel station, which certainly makes it easier to be an environmentally conscious driver!

The Low Emission Zone was first introduced in London in 2008; its purpose being to reduce the level of pollution in London, for the good of residents and visitors alike. To drive into the zone without having to pay a daily charge, heavy polluting diesel vehicles such as buses and lorries have to meet certain emissions standards which lower the amount of particulate matter coming from their exhausts. Particulate matter has been linked to asthma and other respiratory illnesses, as well as heart disease.

A report from the London Mayoral office has suggested that up to 4,000 people die a year in the capital due to sustained exposure to pollution. From January 2012 the emissions standards will be more stringent and more vehicle types will have to pay the charges. Although no cars are subject to the Low Emission Zone charges at the moment, it is likely that the highest gas-guzzlers will be included in the future.

On the other hand, drivers of vehicles with low emissions such as a hybrid are already benefiting financially from their greener choices. Since January 2011 Transport for London has awarded a Greener Vehicle Discount in the Congestion Charge Zone in central London for cars which produce less than 100g/km of CO2 and meet the Euro 5 standard for air quality. Under the Alternative Fuel Discount, there’s also a 100% discount for cars running on gas or LPG, and petro-electric hybrid cars.

A recent report by The Energy Saving Trust suggested that Britain’s carbon footprint could be reduced by as much as a quarter if we all considered which cars we choose to drive more carefully. So, when you’re thinking about changing your car, bear in mind that a fuel-efficient car will not only save you petrol or diesel costs, but you’ll be also be improving the air quality for everyone around you.
